Can Fair trade really reduce poverty?

We’re so glad you asked this question! As a business that has spent 15 years on supporting the Fair trade mission, this is a question that we ponder about often, we want to know if we’re doing enough and if it works. And this is what we have found out: Contrary to our beliefs, a higher GDP doesn’t reduce poverty; a higher income doesn’t always bring fulfillment and happiness. If you pay attention to the situation in Hong Kong, you can probably draw a similar conclusion. And this is what we have learned -- To reduce poverty, paying fair wages isn’t enough, we also have to change and improve the system within that community.

This is why we’ve chosen to work with Fair trade certified producers over and over again. Because Fair trade is more than better prices, it’s also about decent working conditions, gender equality, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers for the marginalized population around the globe. While it may not be a perfect system, we’ve seen in our own experience, farmers and workers are able to build abetter and more secure life for themselves, their co-workers and their families. Fair trade farmers are more likely to invest in education services and housing improvement.

If you’re still not convinced, let’s look at an interesting fact together. Since the launch of the Fair trade movement, more and more small producers are being Fair trade Certified. We may not know exactly what is going to each producer, but they join because they see the incentives in joining, and they believe that being certified as a Fair trade farm will bring positive changes to their lives.

Now, if you’re still reading, thank you for your patience. To be honest, there is no easy answer when it comes to reducing poverty. As our world becomes increasingly connected and complex, we’ll be able to find new and better ways to solve the world’s problems.

Do you have any Fair trade decaf coffee?

Unfortunately or fortunately there is a low demand for decaf coffee. Therefore, we’re only roasting them by request for our wholesale vendors at the moment.

How should I store my coffee?

The storage of your coffee is just as important as sourcing them. You want to store your coffee so it stays fresh and flavourful. If you’re one of those people who need to drink coffee right after you wake up, you may want to store it where it is easily accessible when you’re half sleeping. With all of that in mind:

-       Choose a cool, dry and dark place. Avoid direct sun light.

-       Avoid storing coffee in the refrigerator or freezer. The humidity can infiltrate the packaging and change the taste of your coffee.

Keep in mind, the container you use to store your coffee is just as important. If you don’t drink coffee every day, it is a good idea to invest in a stainless-steel and air-tight container. If you’re a coffee addict, you should try our coffee subscription program. So you never run out of fresh and delicious coffee.
