World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 in order to encourage people around the world to raise awareness and take action to protect the environment. World Environment Day originated in June 1972 as a day established by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the first environmental conference held in Stockholm, and the first World Environment Day was held in 1974.

The theme of this year's World Environment Day is "Only one Earth," a call to action for collective change to honor, protect and restore our planet. Because there is only one Earth, we must take care of it.

The planet is facing three global emergencies: a climate that is warming too fast for humans and nature to adapt; habitat loss and other pressures that threaten to wipe out an estimated one million species; and pollution that continues to poison our air, land and water. To keep global warming below 1.5°C in this century, we must cut annual greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. If no action is taken, the number of people exposed to air pollution that exceeds safety standards will increase by 50 percent within a decade, and the amount of waste plastic flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.

Global warming is causing natural disasters, glacial melting, tsunamis and typhoon formation. You think it's none of your business? I believe that every Hong Kong resident has felt the damage caused by the annual rise in temperature and typhoons. We can't predict when a disaster will appear before our eyes, but we can plan ahead to stop the further deterioration of the earth's ecological environment.
